CHECKLIST: NOTIFY YOUR NEW ADDRESS

Congratulations on the move! When you move you need to update your address in several places. Here is a checklist of the main things to take care of. Tick each item off as you go.

THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRST

• Registers Iceland (Thjodskra) – register your new legal domicile (logheimili) at island.is / skra.is. This is the basis for most other things reaching the right address. The move must be reported no later than seven days after you move.
• Iceland Post (Pósturinn) – ask for mail forwarding at a post office (with ID, for a fee) and label your mailbox with your name.

MONEY AND INSURANCE

• Insurance company – update your home and contents insurance and notify them of the new address so cover applies in the right place. If you own the property, also see to the mandatory fire insurance (brunatrygging) – and, if relevant, property insurance (fasteignatrygging) – on the new home.
• Your bank – update your address in online/home banking.
• Pension fund – update your contact details and address.

WORK AND HEALTH

• Employer / payroll – let them know your new address.
• Health clinic / family doctor – update your address and check which health clinic (heilsugaesla) serves your new area.

UTILITIES AND SUBSCRIPTIONS

• Electricity – register electricity at the new home (and close or notify the move at the old one).
• Heating / hot water – update your registration with the utility provider (e.g. Veitur or the relevant provider in your area).
• Internet and TV – report the move or order a connection at the new address.
• Other subscriptions – phone, streaming services, newspapers and anything else that sends bills or post.

IF APPLICABLE

• Vehicle register (Transport Authority) – vehicle owners' addresses are taken from Registers Iceland and update automatically, but it is worth confirming that vehicle taxes and notices arrive correctly.
• Other – children's school or preschool, sports clubs, your union and anyone else who needs your new address.

Tip: Many institutions and companies pick up changes from Registers Iceland regularly, but not all equally often, so it is a good idea to tell the most important ones directly.
